FAQs

Do you have a minimum price or price per square foot?

Due to the difficulty of making profits pencil out, we rarely do jobs that cost less than $1000 except screen and recoats. It ties up our equipment from being able to meet the demand our company has for service. The situations are handled on a case by case basis, but it simply doesn't pencil out to sand a 50 square foot foyer for example.

Most jobs are honestly not estimated for our company on simply a per square foot basis. We find this to be relevant for wood floor material pricing. However, we are a full service hardwood flooring contractor. Simply stated, we provide labor AND all materials so that we can ensure consistent delivery of a quality floor.

Pricing per square foot is a bad model for two reasons:

1) It plays russian roulette with the profitability of a company depending on job size. Unprofitable or low profit contractors will ALWAYS deliver less service because they have less time to be around for the job and usually end up rushing or cutting corners.

2) It is such an inaccurate measure regarding the consistently changing pricepoint of materials and doesn't allow our company profit structure to maintain a healthy balance. If our company is not profitable, then we simply will not be able to survive and take care of our customers over the years. This is critical because it is one of the fundamental principles by which we do business.

Who does the work?

At this time our company work is handled by Scott Avery, Destry O'Connor, and Andrew Douglas. We are all employees of the company and not subcontractors. There is a complete chain of command for responsibility of quality to which we adhere. The employees are covered by workers compensation and are legitimately employed. Scott Avery is the owner and greatly depends upon the help of his top notch employees Destry and Andrew for creating quality hardwood floors. There are no charades within the company and hidden layers of management for "passing the buck". As a real bonus, no employee in the company is a smoker.

What differentiates your company from the rest?

We stand committed to the advancement of our industry by maintaining membership and certifications through the National Wood Flooring Association. Scott Avery has been on the technical education committee for the NWFA for two years at this point and has been asked to return in 2010. In addition, we are members of the Oregon Remodelers Association and have served on the membership committee for three years. Rather than simply join and parade our membership, we actually get involved in the organizations and have very committed relationships with the best in the business. It enables us to stay very informed with the remodeling and hardwood flooring industry in a way that most companies do not. We are proud of what we do and the company has a solid reputation in Portland for caring about our level of service.

Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?

Yes and we cannot emphasize how important it is to ask this question of all contractors who you may be hiring. I assure you that if your contractor isn't bonded or insured that if they do anything detrimental to your home that the damages almost never are covered by anyone but you. This is a considerable risk given that the most valued asset most people have is their home.

Regarding the process, you may investigate any contractor by clicking this link. This will tell you the complete history of a contractor who is or has ever been licensed. Contractors with questionable ethics will actually have a number of companies and aliases connected to the company on the business card they hand you and you can identify this in the records. Key items also to look for are lack of surety bond, suspensions, or administrative penalties.

We feel that if you are comparing our estimate to another contractor that it is worth time to do an investigation so that you can make a true apples to apples comparison.
